So much of life has been centred on food and drink. The love language between me and my partner. A daily obsession of what to eat. My window onto culture. The primary leisure activity, focus of holidays and consumer of most of my discretionary spend. And for over a decade my livelihood too.
And then, aged 52, a baby arrives.
The excitement of teaching our son how to eat and love food beckons. A new dimension for food adventures at home and abroad. As a cook who takes joy in feeding others, having another mouth at the table is exciting. And extended parental leave should give more time to cook.
But alongside this there are the little elements of fear: having to curtail the number and extent of cooking projects, the challenge of trying to feed a really picky eater, or manage allergies; the question of how much of a compromise this will be on the three-decade long commitment to delicious and exciting eating; the reality that ‘what to cook and eat’ will no longer be the most important question of each day.
